WOMEN IN PAKISTAN

"No nation can rise to the height of glory unless your women are side by side with you; we are victims of evil customs. It is a crime against humanity that our women are shut up within the four walls of the houses as prisoners. There is no sanction anywhere for the deplorable condition in which our women have to live."(Mohammad Ali Jinnah, 1944)
“All citizens are equal before law and are entitled to equal protection of law. There shall be no discrimination on the basis of sex alone".
"No citizen otherwise qualified for appointment in the service of Pakistan shall be discriminated against in respect of any such appointment on the ground only of…sex…"
"The state shall protect the marriage, the family, the mother…"The state shall… [Ensure] that…women are not employed in vocations unsuited to their sex alone…"Constitution of Pakistan Articles 25, 27, 35, 37.
"Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of the person. Men and women of full age without any limitation due to race, nationality or religion, have the right to marry or to have a family. They are entitled to equal rights as to marriage and its dissolution. Marriage shall be entered in to only with the free and full consent of the attending spouses. The family is the natural and fundamental group, unit of society and is entitled to protection by society and state." All these beautifully constructed sentences take a180 degrees turn while considering the status of specifically 'women' in Pakistan. Our women still seem to be living in the dark ages. It is a matter of deep sorrow that being Muslims we have completely forgotten the status of women given by Islam. Annie Bessant in her book, 'The Life and Teachings of Mohammad (P.B.U.H)' says, "I often think that women are more free in Islam than in Christianity. Women are more respected by Islam then by the faith which preaches monogamy."
Islam was the first religion to recognize the equality of sexes and granted women rights unheard of 1400 years ago. Their other tragedy lies in the fact that what was highly progressive in those early days of Islam and which ought to have been kept in step with the changing of the realities of life through Ijtehad, was frozen in that position through retrogressive interpretation of religious edicts. In addition to that, male chauvinism and cultural taboos, some of them derived from the Hindu society have combined to keep our women down.
In Pakistan the story of a woman's deprivations start even before her birth, because the girl-child is not a particularly 'wanted' child. Her life is a journey of subordination. When she is young her father decides for her on matters ranging from whether she will get any education, to the all important matters of whom she would marry. After marriage, her husband and her in-laws get hold of her reins and decide matters on her behalf; like shall she or shall she not have a child every year, or whether she would produce only boys, or whether she can seek independent employment and so on. Finally when she becomes old and her husband gets weak or may have gone already, it is her son or sons who decide her fate in the declining years of her life. As if this is not enough, the whole society acts as an oppressor, browbeating her in to obedience. Thus, the word 'woman' in Pakistan is synonymous with 'endurance'. She is simply forced to accept certain bare facts of life once she grows up to be a woman. Be it on streets, or for that matter in restaurants, a woman is first and foremost required to be alert. It is best to try and not notice, women are told.
In addition to that, women in Pakistan face all kinds of gross violence and abuse at the hands of the male perpetuators, family members and state agents. Multiple forms of violence include rape; domestic abuse as spousal murder, mutilation, burning and disfiguring faces by acid, beatings; ritual honour-killings and custodial abuse and torture. Even in 21st century some families don’t allow the girls to study in co education system rather boys are allowed to go for education. If the girl permitted and got a degree then they are not allowed for jobs. It is a common surveillance parents don’t like to spend lot money on daughter’s education because they think it’s wasteful, after marriage her work is just to look after and cooked a good food for the husband, children, and in-laws. I am giving an example some parents are so broad minded but still they are not giving permission to go abroad for further studies except in one option and the option is marriage. After marriage go with husband even all the expenses will be given by us. Is this a right or wrong option? I don’t know……..Why parents don’t allow? Shiite and Sunni both are Muslims but difference religious caste but in Shiite families don’t their girls to marry out of her religious cast boy, but boys are allowed to marry. This is a time for us to change these thinking and give women to their rights, freedom and not consider them as a slave.

  2. Awesome article.Ifra may you be rewarded for your efforts. As a Muslim man i think Muslim men should join together to prevent violence against women,it is very important to show how Islam teaches us to treat people with respect and dignity and to always enjoin good and forbid evil regardless of someone's race, gender or religion...

  3. According to my point of view Violence and abuse affect all kinds of people every day. It doesn't matter what race or culture you come from, how much money you have, how old you are, or if you have a disability. Violence does not discriminate.Abuse can be physical, mental, and emotional.Violence against women in any form is a crime, whether the abuser is a family member or someone else

  4. One thing more i want to say is that as u said "In Shiite families parents don’t allow their girls to marry with Sunni boys, but boys are allowed to marry"...but same is the case with Sunni families,Sunni parents don't allow their girls to marry with Shiite boy,but there boys are allowed to marry with a Shiite Girls...I don't think so that problem is with sunnis or shiites, both are muslims, but the main problem is of gender.

we all sholud respect our women but Unfortunately many people consider women as a worthless because we all forget our saying of Prophet Mohammad(S.A.W) and words of holy Quran which clearly describes all human being are equal this is very bad thing for we all should be ashamed of it.

  6. An honor killing (also called a customary killing) is the murder of a family or clan member by one or more fellow family members, where the murderers (and potentially the wider community) believe the victim to have brought dishonor upon the family, clan, or community.

  7. These killings result from the perception that defense of honor justifies killing a person whose behavior dishonors their clan or family. Honor killing is mostly widespread in Islamic countries or countries with predominantly Muslim population.

  8. Honor crimes are acts of violence, usually murder, committed by male family members against female family members, who are held to have brought dishonor upon the family. A woman can be targeted by (individuals within) her family for a variety of reasons, including: refusing to enter into an arranged marriage, being the victim of a sexual assault, seeking a divorce...

  9. Another shameful act is Watta satta.Watta satta is a tribal custom in Pakistan of exchanging brides between two families. At the time of marriage, both families trade brides. That is, both families must have a daughter and a son and be willing to betroth them to a daughter and son of the other family. For example, in order for one to marry off his son, he must also have a daughter to marry off in return to the same family.

  15. Either it is about women in Pakistan or around the world , they must be educated enough to know what are their legal and social right , they must equip them with reason and logic as to support their viewpoint and have courage to discriminate between right and wrong, beacause every livig soul on this earth has to fight for their own.

  16. This is a very informative article. this tells us abou awl da problems that women are facing in reality these days

in my opinion, even after women have been given representation in the national assembly. they still are not given the dignity and respect they have been proided with =in our religion.

still alot has to be done for women empowerment and to provide them a secure envorionment.

  24. Womenr rights is one of the most under discussion issues of 21st century. i dont know why women are always protesting for there rights when they r already enjoying more than what they deserve. Particularly women in Pakistan, I dont knoew why is so, Islam has Provided them with all the rights which have given them with independence...

  31. i think the problem in our ownselves i my self want to work for that particular right of Women that women is facing.. but when problem is in one own innerself when each and every person will make their own innerself clean all the matter of giving respect to other human being whether a Man or a Women both should know how to give respect to other if both sides wll be equal in sense of attitudes, behaviour, gestures, the way of dealing with others if all these aspects are dealt with respect and viel within your eyes and heart must be pured .... and our culture is going beyond all this .... According to me Womens are having equal rights ... they have a Right to do anything within Islamic limits or laws as Men have .... Women have a right to go outside as i said according to islamic Rules ... Women have a right to work also some Islamic Laws implied on this as well .. Women even have a Right to Select her spouse as well .... i have seen so many of such cases where Parents forcefully do marry their daughters to the very old person .... just because of wealth as i said Women have a right to select her spouse, her parents have no right to force her parents responsibility is to give her good ethics is to give her Islamic teachings and fullfill her needs and to educate them properly and when the time comes for her Marriage Parents just can say what is better for her who is betterfor her but they cant put their own ideas on her in that matter they cant force her to do so if she dont want or if dont likes him She can denies openly to herParents That i dont like her and i dont want to Marry that person ... and its Pernts responsibility to Accept her acceptance or denial abput any such purposal .... if we start talking about Women Rights their Are Many to be solved ....
